Do these work? I've heard that HDDs can be wired up to an amp, and to your comp, and then the write heads actually make music! How is this done? I saw it on www.afrotechmods.com and though it was pretty ghetto until I saw it in action!

I once did try to find those wires from some old 286comp's harddrive but I didn't find them where I thought they should have been and I then didn't try to put the wires some where caus' I didn't want to brake my soundcard :P Dunno if it could even break it but still... There might be some heat in the harddrives other parts that can pop, or that's what I've heard but think that it will work if you just put the wires on their place.

ah, the HDD speaker... I actually managed to get it working with an old 800 Mb bad cluster disguised as a HDD... It was quite simple, just removed all the electronics and soldered two wires into some place on the write head where there had been 3 other wires before

It really worked when I plugged it into an amplifier system, but it required quite a high volume setting to be audible... and then the write head was also moving like hell so all high sounds (and that sounds really bad). It also started smelling a bit burnt on high volumes and one time I tried cranking it up to the max: it made a k3wl crackling sound, and generated some blue sparks and some smoke and didn't wanna work anymore so now I just have it somewhere in my room without any kind of usage...

sorry if this sounds flumsy, it's 12:43 in the night and I'm tired... gotta wake up at 7 for school as well...

Why the hell would any one waste good hard drives like that? Hard drives dancing to the music just seems pointless and idiotic.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to say this again...

Use a Broken Drive!

yeah, I did that, mine was 800... it was pretty useless because it was full of bad clusters, not formattable and complained about wanting to be formatted all the time so I decided to make it into sumthin =)

Well, I'm going to get a collection of mine (45Gig w/ball bearing prob), my friend's (Caviar, unknown size), and my other friend's (Bigfoot massive ultra-cool 1Gig Hdd) hard drives and make this HDD Speaker thing for this aural decypher we're working on to play mp3s (basically a linux distro on a minimum spec comp with LCD navigation - like a huge ipod). 8)

I post vids and pics when I'm done!

hehe - we're making it in plexiglass so that'd be easy.
