A friend of mine tried this mod some time ago, and it produced a rather nice effect... great idea IMO, but needs a bit refining.

Put a piece of metal (that reacts to magnets) on a fan blade. Take a led and connect it to a field break switch (magneettikytkin/magnetic switch). Power up the fan and the led, and put the switch near the metal piece on the fan blade. If the led is bright enough, or the room dark enough, you should see the fan blade "stay still" as the led lights up once per turn.

In my friend's experiment there was a rather big piece of metal that made the fan vibrate a bit, and the switch wasn't placed accurately enough... the fan blade looked like it was goind back and forth just a bit.

This mod definitely needs proper finger guard / grill on the fan

Hmm... what I would do/test would require Ir emitter and receiver. Both placed on the opposite sides of the blades. When the blade cuts the beam, the Led would light up for short period of time. Perhaps few milliseconds. Then this process would repeat itself on the edge of the next blade etc. Flashing of the led would be faster so the light should appear more steady but the blades would still be "frozen in time". Main thing here is that the fan blades remain in their original state.

Other possibility would be to use the yellow RPM sensor wire. It produces two pulses per revolution so it could control the led flashing and would be even more "separated" from the fan itself.

Using the RPM sensor would probably be a good solution... what kind of a pulse does it give?
