Infrared (IR) or ultrasonic motion detector kits are relatively cheap. IR ones are also pretty easy to make fully DIY style too. Just hook two of these up to the side of the driveway and the activation order tells you the direction the person or a car is going.

If you want more electronics you could use circuit that senses the change in capacity if some metal object passes near the "antenna". Then you could embed two of these inside the driveway and sense only the cars passing over them.

And the third option could be to use IR or Laser light gates. The ones that you can see in supermarkets that open you the gate. At least we have these here in Finland. Sender is on the other side of the walkway and receiver on the other. If the beam is tripped, the receiving circuit will then activate a relay, motor or just raise some input on your computer.

I want to hook up something similar ...for my mailbox.
Why should I have to walk the 3 feet to the door and go outside just to see if i have mail?

my point exactly why should i have to get up and walk 3 feet to a window to check if anyones there... it's just extra work that can be avoided through modding...

Alright who knows how to do the mailbox one? I have no idea how to set up infared or anything, and be warned that if you try to explain it I will probably have more questions after.
Too bad I don't know anybody who lives here who could just do it for me. :(

Done, lid goes up and moves a flag that completes a circiut and lights an LED inside, nothing fancy but it works.
