So i was going to buy a new headset, since the mic on my old one is pretty crappy, then i remembered that i have the Xbox headset, that is pretty useless these days for me, since i don't use Live anymore. First i was going to use just the headset part, but then i remembered that the actual "controller" is basically a USB device. A little googling and i could even find a PC driver for it!
I don't have pictures of the process on my computer, but i got them in my camera, in case someone is interested. Anyway, i desoldered the connector in the headset controller, and then soldered a usb wire there. I could've soldered a circuit board usb connector there too, but then the volume and mic controls would've been out of my reach.
Of course the headset controller wouldn't stay up on my desk, and i didn't want it floating around, so i started seeking for something it could stand on. I found the transmitter of an old Logitech wireless mouse, a little planning, some drilling and dremeling, and tada. it was ready.
At this point, i decided that it'd be nice if i could see the volume control scroller in dark, so i soldered a bright orange led inside the controller case.
