I did a FireWheel too.
But it isn't really a "FireWheel", becouse I used a blue led, so it is now "IceWheel".

on techtv a guy on the screen savers made one with 2 colors, blue and red

Go to his site and read the credits from the start. I know about that he did this mod too because after the show my site was over run by flood of visitors.

I kinda cheated when I modded my mouse. Ive got an optical wireless mouse, when it is plugged in to charge the batteries, the wheel lights up red. I really didnt like the red color(it didnt match any other leds on my computer, there all green). So instead of takin out the red led and soldering a green one on(cuz i cant solder ). I pulled a 5v green led from a SCSI cd burner, wired the light straight from the battery, and just covered up the red light by the wheel. I really havent noticed a change in the battery life(mainly cuz its all ways plugged in). I might run a battery test soon, and say how shorter the battery life is. I just might post a pic in the gallery too.

If you had a multimeter you could measure how much current is flowing through the led. This would give the idea how much strain it is putting to the batteries. Don't think that it is very much because you salvaged that led from a burner and they don't use any power hungry leds.

Kills the batteries. I waited till midnight that night, at about 5pm today it started to die. the battery life went from 3 days to 17 hours . That sux. I posted some pix. See them here. The reason it last for 3 days w/out recharge is cuz after a minute or so of not moving it, it turns off the led, then reactives with a clik or a wheel move. My multimeter reads 2.65v from the led leads.
Im sure this idea is another thread, but, if i had my friend replace the red led at the bottom, with my green one, would that interfer or make the mouse not work good??? Im gettin 2.04v from the bottem led. im pretty sure it shines just as bright as the green one i got.
