Everytime I try to solder my red LED into the ground, it just freakin falls off. The solder cools on top of it and doesnt actually stick to the ground wire. Does anyone have any tips?

You have to give enough heat for the both surfaces that you are connecting together. Larger the metal piece, more heat it needs so that the solder sticks to the surface.

I suggest using the smallest piece of solder u can find (not too small, but u know). Now you wanna get the solder and the metal really hot, so it like melds into the metal. Add enough, like a droplet onto the molex thingy, and then let it cool - I like to shove mine into the freezer (no pun intended  )

man, it took some work, but i got it soldered on pretty good.

then i brutally smashed it with a hammer to let out all the anger that i built up from the last 50 times i burned my hand, or it just fell off. i gotta tell you guys, it felt gooooooood. :!:

i got it by luck though, im pretty sure of that. how would i set both the things (solder and wire) in place for me to solder it without...holding it somehow?

the way i do it is i first heat up the peice of metal, then get some solder to stick to that. then i grab the wire and get the solder hot enough so that i can see that its liquidy. then i just take away the soldering iron and place the wire on it instantly, hold it, then blow on it to cool it off. i have only burned myself once, thats cuz i wanted to see if the soldering iron was hot, cuz the solder wasnt melting. so i touched it. i got a little blister, waited till i got to skool then poped it so my friends could see it.

ive never burned myself with the solder, just intense feelings of pain for like a second or two. however, the hot glue gun is another story. the thing burned me like 5 times, a blister everytime. along with my painful blister, my typing skills are compromised! ill be sure to give these techniques a try when im not busy doing nothing

To keep the two components in place that are to be soldered i purchased a set of hobby helping hands, it has a solid base and two movable clips that will hold wires without damaging them. These can be purchased from any good electronics or hobby store.

ive seen those b4. my neighbor uses one of those when he's painting the models that he puts together. it is a lot easier to use the airbrush to paint those models when using those clips, rather than gettin ur fingers blue. ive never thought about usin one of those for the soldering.

just out of curiosity, are the clips on that contraption metal, or plastic? Its just cause it gets prety damn hot near a soldering iron...

Off topic I know, but the best thing i have found for burns, and i burn myself *Lots*, is a teabag.

Just an ordinary teabag soaked in cold water and placed and held against the burn area. it does stain yer skin a bit but it works
:)

hm, thats interesting gimp. those helping hands seem like a good idea too. maybe you could glue some sheet metal on top, just to spread the heat on the clamps, if theyre plastic. ive been using duct tape to keep the wires together lately, its pretty good if you cut it up in little strips, and it does the wires from moving. my solders have been pretty neat ever since :P

about what color does the tea bags stain ur skin. u could do that to ur whole arm and just play it off as a tan. lol.

on that thing with the clamps, the clamps are metal. never thought of that, u could just go and melt some plastic on it.

as for taping the wires down for soldering, i use masking tape. it tears easily, and it doesnt melt when u touch it with the soldering iron.
