ATX or BTX ???

Postby sean0 on 07.06.2004 11:42

im planning to blow all my money on a lian li PC61 or similar..and yes i will mod it, just a blowhole window n stuff. BUT, im not sure i should do this when btx cases are just coming on the market, so i want to know wether it would be wise to get an older cheaper atx version or the btx type of lian li when they come out :?

but im so impatient i want it now

i havent read anything about the btx mobos yet, but the dimensions cant be that much different from atx. just buy the lian li and when btx comes out tou can drill new holes in the mobo tray.

Here is quote from X-Bit labs article:
Mainboard Makers Not Enraptured by BTX

New Intel's Form-Factor Faces Resistance
by Anton Shilov
06/04/2004 | 01:18 PM

Despite of all advantages Intel Corp. endowed its new BTX form-factor, mainboard makers are note really enthusiastic about the emerging standard. There are very few BTX mainboards at Computex Taipei 2004 show, which may indicate pretty tough times for BTX.

Introduced in September 2003, the BTX form-factor for computer cases and mainboards is developed to succeed the widely-used ATX architecture. The main idea behind BTX is to optimize the design of mainboard in order to allow more efficient cooling by placing central processing unit, memory controller hub and graphics card in a way that all of them would be blown by the same flow of air. This ensures that no more than one fan is required for a typical PC, but still provides efficient cooling.

Even though BTX does bring some interesting capabilities for system builders, mainboard makers do not seem to be really enthusiastic about the first version of technology and are likely to stick to ATX variations this year. Unofficial sources indicated that Intel had been constantly tweaking its Balanced Technology eXtended, which encouraged them to wait for the final specifications before jumping on the bandwagon.

The majority of mainboard makers consider BTX launch for late Q3 or Q4 2004, when everything will be finalized. However, in case Intel adds more changes to the form-factor, the adoption of BTX is only likely to ramp in 2005.

No officials commented on the report.

From here you can find more info about BTX (PDF-document!)

If Lian li have any brains it will sell BTX motherboard trays for their ATX cases when BTX MoBo's come.
(Tough im not sure if it is possible to make ATX case to BTX just by changing the MoBo tray)

I think you should buy ATX case. BTX as it is now .. sucks (just my opinion)

i did a little more reasearch on btx, it seems that it will be mainstream in a few years but untill then id stick to atx because that is the industry standard now. especially if you cant wait

BTX comes just to make us addicted freaks buy new stuff. i'm happy with my ATX for now, won't buy anything other until my sys will be really slow in comparison to others.
