Results

FSB speed

There have been some rumors that manufacturers run their boards with a bit higher frequencies to gain an edge in benchmarks. As seen here only the Gigabyte GA-7VRXP has a higher FSB speed. Not dramatically but noticable. Value got with CPU-Z.

General tests

Pifast (Time in seconds. Lower value is better.)

Pifast is widely used here in Finland to test processors computing power. As you can see the race was pretty even and nobody were a clear winner.

Sandra (Higher value is better)

GA-7VRXP takes a small lead in this synthetic test. This test measures the processors speed in interger and in floating point operations.

Sandra (Higher value is better)

Again we see GA-7VRXP on the top position. Differences are small but noticable.

Sandra (Higher value is better)

Being one of the most used tests in SiSoft Sandra. GA-7VRXP takes the top position in all of these synthetic tests.

Gaming speed

3DMark2001 SE (Higher value is better)

3DMark2001 is a popular tool for testing system's 3d performance. Test were run with default settings and only containing the games part of the test. Soyo's board was the fastest but the gap between the first and the second was only 55 points.

Comanche 4 (Higher value is better)

Comanche 4 test is based on Novalogic's Comanche 4 helicopter simulation game. It is quite hard on the system but the accuracy seems to be good. Dragon Ultra was the fastest but again the winning marginal was very small.

Dronez (Higher value is better)

Dronez tests the OpenGL part of the GFX card and T&L speed. Same results here as we have observed on the previous game tests. Dragon Ultra leading the pack.

NBench (Higher value is better)

NBench is a benchmarking program developed by AMD. It measures the CPU's ability to render complex 3D scenes. Now that the focus changes from GFX card to CPU results change to indicate equal power. Can't really talk about differences in these results.

Quake 3 (Frames per second. Higher is better.)

This program needs no introductions. Soyo Dragon Ultra takes a first place. This time the margin to the second is 1 fps.

Conclusions

Soltek SL-75DRV5

Soltek has again produced a stable and qood quality board. It does not have bundle that others have and it still uses jumpers for many of its settings. Many buyers that don't want to spend their money to all these extras will be totally happy with this board.

Anti-Burn Shield II monitors the Athlon XP thermal diode to protect the CPU from frying if there is no cooler attached etc. During the review period this system saved my processor once and therefore I value this feature quite high. I'm hoping that this kind of protective measure could be issued to every future motherboard.

Board also includes RedStorm Overcloking feature that will test your system and find the highest stable FSB setting. I tried this few times but in every case the system crashed in the middle of the test and therefore I coudn't use it properly. Maybe this is a BIOS issue that will be corrected in future releases.

Few design flaws like those IDE connectors might affect your decision when buying a new KT333 board but SL-75DRV5 is a rock solid, includes active cooling for the North Bridge and comes with a low price tag. Easy to recommend this board to every low budget computer buyer.

Gigabyte GA-7VRXP

If you need RAID, USB2.0 and Networking support this board is something you really should look at. I really liked the rear brackets where Gigabyte has included four USB2.0 and two USB1.1 ports. This way you'll get plenty of connectors to play with right out from the box.

GA-7VRXP is a well designed board with all the connectors in right places. Only downsides being only two fan headers and lack of active cooling. North Bridge was very hot and this could affect the stability in a long run. Rounded edges on the board is a nice touch. This way you won't hurt your hands while installing the board.

Dual BIOS feature is something that every bios flasher will love. Nothing can be as frustrating as a power cut out at the middle of flashing new bios. Sorry, lost your board. Not any more! In this board there is another bios chip that will kick in as soon as it notices that there is something wrong with the other chip. You can then reflash the defective chip or copy the BIOS code from the working chip to other. Very easy and handy.

All these things combined this board looks really great. You'll get plenty of expansion features and combined with a great stability you have one of the top KT333 boards on the market.

Soyo SY-KT333 Dragon Ultra Platinum

Now this I call a bundle! You get all the standard stuff like cables for RAID etc. but Soyo has added Sigma Box that gives you Compact Flash/Smart Media readers and two USB2.0 ports and also a SPDIF audio riser with optical input/output connectors. If one must try to find something missing they might be those additional USB port brackets. With this package you'll get just two USB connectors on back of your computer and two on the front side in that Sigma box.

The board is well designed and I like that turned socket a lot. Easy to install different coolers when you power supply doesn't block your access. IDE connectors are split into two groups so full length Ti4600 card fits nicely between them. Dragon Ultra Platinum also has AGP pro socket and active cooling for the North Bridge. That transparent fan can really make a difference when overclocking by giving the board more stability.

I had some problems concerning the Sigma box. At least under Windows XP there are some users that can't get the card readers to work properly in every boot. I had the same problem but when I switched the cable from USB2.0 connector on motherboard to USB1.1 connector the problem seemed to occure less frequent. Maybe this has something to do with USB2.0 drivers on Windows XP.

If you are looking for a good quality board with RAID, USB2.0, network support and crystal clear 6 channel audio this is the one. With the transparent fan, silver heat sink and cool color of the PCB this board really looks sweet through the case window.
