LiPo batteries should not be recharged with that dad's old car battery charger found in the garage. Recharging the LiPo batteries with an intelligent charger ensures their reliable operation for years to come and in good luck it may save your home from a LiPo fire.

Accucell 6 in the photo is a very good alternative to recharge batteries such as 1-6S LiPos as well as the older NiMH and lead acid batteries. Intelligence with charger means that it is able to handle the cells of the battery pack separately, guaranteeing a smooth, high-quality charge. The charger is able to monitor the charging progress and stop charging under variety of conditions (voltage level, charging time, the loaded capacity, etc.).

Accucell 6 charger misses the 12 volt power supply. This might not necessarily be a bad thing, because you can recharge the flight batteries by simply hooking up the charger to your car battery with alligator clips and continue to top up the LiPos in the field. I use an old laptop power supply to supply the charger, but if you do not want to look for a suitable separate power supply, there are models with the power supply built-in. The picture shows a quite clever 80 watt charger with its own power supply, costing about 20 euros.
