Latest in evolution on this article is the DS-Xtreme. It is a Slot 1 solution that doesn't need any PassMe or FlashMe tricks to work. It doesn't need any software on PC side to convert the roms as all the data can be simply dragged and dropped to it. Game ROMS, homebrew, music etc. works without problems.

Quick specs from manufacturer's site:

  • One single unified device, no need for GBA Cart, external memory or passme/flashme
  • Functions as a flash cart, compatible with homebrew, media and other image files
  • Plug 'n Play, no PC software required allowing for some seriously sweet Drag 'n Drop file transfer
  • Intuitively designed custom operating system which is fully upgradeable
  • Included 4GBit (512Mbyte) onboard flash memory
  • Bespoke hardware design compatible with all current and future DS consoles, same size as original DS cartridge . does NOT stick out!
  • Custom engineered components such as a High-Speed USB 2.0 mini-B connector and full sized EEPROM.

As you propably spotted from the specs, DS-X uses USB2.0 for file transfers. This means that it doesn't take long to move even larger archives of MP3s or several games to the card. What makes everything even more great is the fact that the DS-X can be used for file transfers while being slotted to the console or used separately.

As you can see, the DS-X is listed on the Slot 1 box and the Slot 2 box is grayed out as it doesn't contain anything other than the dust cover. Simply tap the DS-Xtreme box or press A and the DS-X main menu will boot up.

The Main menu. Nothing special here. Just the selections for Application, Music, Setting and About menus. Everything happens on the lower screen so the interface is fully touch sensitive.

Application menu scans the cards Application folder for software when booted up. One doesn't need to store all the programs to the main folder as the software scans all the subfolders too. This makes the management of the games and programs a lot easier. Software is started simply by touching the program icon or by pressing A button. Almost too easy.

Dancing Leds

This is something rather unique from other Flash carts. DS-X contains two small RGB-leds that can be individually controlled. This means that you can select the brightness and color for each other from the settings menu or activate the "Dancing Leds" feature. When you load up song in Media Player and start playing it, something totally useless but on the other hand very interesting happens. Take a look at the video below.

All in all I found that the DS-X offers the best compatibility to different pieces of homebrew. I also loved the possibility to use the product without any additional software etc. Extremely simple and enjoyable to play with.
