I've mentioned the word "homebrew" couple of times now. Homebrew software is something that anyone can develop on their own if one has the proper developement tools. Usually this includes a compatible compiler and needed libraries. On some consoles it is illegal to develop homebrew applications as the needed libraries and SDKs are copyrighted by the manufacturer and are not sold nor are available by other legal means to the general public.

So, you can add a lot more functionality to your NDS by using these homebrew applications. What kind of proggies we are talking about then? Here is one list of some of the best pieces of code that I've found:

Explosive Gas

Multiplayer Bomberman style game.

A classic from PC that has been ported to several platforms.

Another classic 3D-shooter.

World of Sand

One might argue that this is not a game but that doesn't change the fact that it is a very addictive toy to play with.

ScummVM DS

Tool to get you gaming with the Lucasart's classics like Sam and Max Hit the Road and Monkey Islands.

Who wouldn't want to play Commodore 64 games any more?
