Installing the led

Sanded and ready

Did you think that I would do a mod without leds? ;) It is quite easy to bundle a led inside the connector so you can do it or leave it out. Cable works great either way.

Because there is only limited room inside the connector you need to use 3 mm led or sand down the 5 mm version. I only had these 5 mm red leds but by using Dremels sanding drums it only took like 15 seconds to make the led this small. Just be careful not to sand those inner metal parts.

Resistor

XBOX provides 5 volts to the controller. It is easy to calculate the proper current limiting resistor by using our calculator. I picked 100 ohm resistor for this red led of mine and it works quite nicely. It doesn't matter on which side of the led you connect the resistor and I used the ground side this time. So the resistor is now soldered to the black wire on the connector.

Soldering ready

I covered the resistor with some heatshring tubing to protect it against short circuits. Other leg in that resistor is connected to led's negative leg and the positive leg in that led is connected to the red wire on the connector. This should make the led glow when the power is available.

Finished

Everything put back together. I applied some hot glue inside the connector to keep everything from moving around when the cable moved but this is not absolutely necessary. We are now ready for some testing to see if the cable or console will breath fire and smoke or work properly.

Testing

Installed to XBOX

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be surprised that it works or not... anyway, it works great. When the power is switched on the led shines brightly inside the connector. Works in games as it is supposed to so everythink is ok on XBOX side.

Installed to PC

Not the most steady shot but the connector is clearly visible. Led is lit because it receives power via the USB connector. All games worked as they should and all the buttons on the controller were usable.

Now where to get the drivers? One of the best drivers around is the XBCD - XBox Controller Driver for Windows 98/2000/XP. Driver is coded by Redcl0ud and pages include good screenshots about each installation step.

All done and tested

Conclusion

XBOX CombiCable

+ Easy to make
+ Cheap to make
+ Works both in XBOX and PC

- Voids the warranty on that piece of cable

So there you have it, XBOX CombiCable with some lights. If you want to play that NHL 2004 on your PC with a good controller, this cable is something that you need to make. I'm not sure if you want to go out and buy original XBOX controller for PC just for this mod but if you have XBOX already, you are halfway there.

This mod is relatively easy to do. There isn't that much room inside the connector but you should do fine. Maybe, if there is enough interest I might do couple of mods more for XBOX so hopefully I will receive some feedback on this in our forum.
