Power Consumption

In power consumption tests it's the clocked 6-cores that draw the highest wattage from the grid. The
clocked 970 BE was running at such a high Vcore it came very close to the 6-cores in loaded consumption, and
actually drew more power at idle. At stock speeds the 6-cores were still drawing a bit more power than the
quads, but the difference of 20 watts is not too bad. The 970 BE and the 965 BE shared virtually the same
numbers at stock speeds.
In this area the Athlon really shines, with an idle wattage 11 watts lower than the nearest competitor
and load wattage of 42 W lower than the 965 BE. So overall while it can't compete in performance, its
performance-per-watt is still pretty similar with the other CPUs.

The Phenom 2 processors have already been around for a good couple of years and over that time they've
seen great improvements in power efficiency and performance. The new chips seen here offer more cores at
higher clock speeds than the old ones, without consuming significantly more power. These latest chips in the
Phenom family follow that proven formula and offer great performance for reasonable price.
Out of these three chips the 970 BE improves on the 965, providing higher clock speeds at the same power
consumption. Depending on the programs used, such quad-core with high clock speeds may perform better than a
lower-clocked 6-core counterpart, and especially for gaming use four cores still looks like the number to
get.
The 1100T BE is the current flagship in the AMD's range of desktop processors. With the unlocked
multiplier the already powerful chip can easily be pushed even further for extra performance. This, combined
with a very reasonable price, deserves the 1100T our Editors Choice-award. The second 6-core in our review,
the 1075T, also offers good performance and value for money, but in our opinion the price difference between
it and the 1100T or 1090T is so small it's usually worth paying some extra and getting one of the unlocked
models instead.
