Overclocking

The overclocking is just like all the earlier Black Edition processors, just crank up the multiplier and vcore until you hit the limit. Previously we've had issues getting the quads stable over 4 GHz, but the 980 improved on this, hitting stable 4200 MHz. Further attempts didn't get us any higher than this, so the 4,2 GHz at 1,450 V was the final clock speed. Anyway the 200 MHz difference over the older models is noticable and makes the new chip very tempting for overclockers.
Benchmarks
- Motherboard: MSI 790FX-GD70
- CPU: Being tested...
- CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D14
- Memory: Corsair TW3X4G1600C9DHXNV
- Graphics: HIS HD5870 iCooler Turbo
- PSU: Xigmatek NRP-1200W
For performance testing we used the same MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard as before, coupled with the HIS HD5870 iCooler Turbo graphics card. The same tests were also ran on intel core i5 750 and i7 870 processors, but for those the components, apart from the graphics card, were so different these results can't be directly compared. While not perfectly fair, they still give an idea of how the new Phenom compares to these two LGA1156 processors.
PCMark7

Just recently Futuremark launched their new PCmark 7 tool that's designed for testing the performance of the PC in many categories. This being a CPU-review we chose the overall PCmark-test as well as CPU-heave "Productivity" and "Computation"-sub tests.
With the scores arranged according to the PCmarks-score, it's the 980 that comes out on top. That said, in computation it does lose to the only hex core in this bunch.
