* Chill Innovation claims that the CP-520A4 complies with the ATX version 2.2 and there are no other specifications about ripples and regulation. So we can assume that the CP-520A4 meets the requirements of the standard.

I tripped some protections on the power supply and the effect is seen on the 5 Vsb rail. Average power supply would have failed instantly and permanently on uderload or short cicuit. The real ripples and regulations on the 5 Vsb should be about the same as measured from the 5 V rail. However the ripples are very nicely in control and there is no very bad drops on voltages. Practically I haven't ever seen that low ripples on any computer power supply. Failure of the 5 Vsb line was pretty unfortunate as the CP-520A4 did so well other than that. Overall the results can be considered very good.

According to Chill Innovation's own tests the efficiency of the power supply is best on 300 W load - 82.45% and worst on loads under 50 Watts - 78%. Efficiency on 520 Watts is 80,12%.

Noise

This time the noise tests were done on an old system containing AMD Athlon 2600+, a single HDD and a fanless Geforce 4-graphic card. While this system does not represent even the lower-end modern computers in the power consumption, it's a good test bench for noise level testing as it has no fans.

First of all I have to say I'm impressed. I decided to listen for the PSU in the middle of the night when the ambient noise is minimal and I found it hard to hear the fan of the CP-520A4 even from point-blank range with the side panel open. Ofcourse air rushing through heat sinks is never entirely silent, but I'd like to say this one is pretty much as close to as it can get.

The quiet operation isn't gained with just lowering the voltage of the fan either, because the temperature of the exhaust air remained low, so the PSU got high enough airflow through it.

Conclusion

PROS
  • very silent fan
  • low ripples on 5 V and 12 V rails

  • CONS
  • no manual supplied
  • not modular
  • Award

Chill Innovation have made their entrance to the PSU market and their product is relatively high-end. The CP-520A4 survived from my little mistakes like underload, short circuits etc. There was very little ripple and regulation was more than adequate. Well it didn't look so high-end from inside but that is not a huge issue. There's nothing bad in the outlooks either, with sleeved cables and all-black housing - you just can't hate it. In addition to very clean output voltages the the CP-520A4 shines also on the noise department. There is no noise! I think this is on of the best power supplies that I have tested. Only thing I miss is modularity.

At most dealers this PSU goes for around 70-75 euros +VAT, so quite cheap price for power supply rated for continuous load of 520 Watts! I would like to reccomend this power supply to every one who cares about quality, outlook and price.
