In use

The Spawn is the first optical mouse we've seen in ages, but in use the different sensor technology doesn't really make a huge difference. The tracking is smooth and we couldn't make the cursor skip.
The shape of the mouse initially felt great, but in longer use it's just a bit off. Maybe my hand is just that little bit too large for the Spawn, but I just found myself switching back to the similar, but larger Mionix Naos after a while of playing. The rubberized sides offer a great grip, but again in longer gaming sessions the texture became just a bit annoying.
Conclusion
The Spawn is the second mouse we've reviewed from CM Storm, and it differs from the first one in a number of ways. Where the Inferno was packed with features, the Spawn is a relatively plain gaming mouse. The shape feels very nice at first, but in longer use it just wasn't quite perfect. The same applies to the rubberized sides, they are lovely at first, but get weary after a while. With some minor tweaks both problems could be avoided, and for some the Spawn may be perfect as-is. Another problem we faced was the very limited software that limits the DPI-settings and macro lengths. If you don't mind the artificial software limitations, it's worth trying the Spawn out, but overall I'd recommend also looking at other choices. |
