Carbide Series 400R

Out of the box and the Carbide 400R looks like a rather subtly styled gaming case. There are plastic bezels on the front and on the front end of the roof, but other than that the case is nice and solid, pressed steel. The case actually has two main colors, gunmetal gray and black. All of the metal parts are gray, and so are the side strips of the front bezel, but the actual bezel is black so black optical drives and other gadgets blend in nicely.

Side

A better look at the side panel shows how large part of the side panel has been pressed out. This not only helps the looks, makes room for the dual 120/140 mm side panel fans and also makes the side panel stiffer than a flat one would be. A small detail to notice is that all of the fan mounts come with rubber grommets as standard. Now clearly the case isn’t aimed for silence enthusiasts, but these are still a nice touch.

Front

And here’s the two-tone front panel. Starting from the top there’s the power-switch, two USB3.0-ports, audio jacks, a single firewire connector and finally switches for reset and turning the lights on and off. Under that are four 5,25” drive bays and finally the two 120 mm intake fans hidden behind a steel mesh. Here we also see the first flaw of the case, there's no dust filter for these intake fans. Behind the steel mesh there's a finer plastic mesh, but this doesn't really count as an easily removable, proper dust filter.

Rear

Looking at the rear it’s the typical layout we’ve seen in a ton of other cases, with the Obsidian 650D being just one of them. At the top there’s a single 120/140 mm fan hole with a 120 mm exhaust fan installed, under it eight PCI-slots and four holes for water cooling hoses and finally a PSU-bay where the power supply can be mounted facing up or down.
