Benchmarks
This time I used two very popular testing softwares for synthetic tests and also a stop watch technique for real life performance measurements. All tests were ran several times to see what is the average performance of the drives.
HD Tune
First up is the HD Tune that is more widely used to measure hard drive performance.

Corsair takes the top spot when talking about average transfer rate. When doing burst transfers, Kingston's DTS drive takes the first place. Access time and CPU Utilization are bit higher on Corsair but the levels are certainly not alarming.
Sisoft Sandra

Sisoft Sandra gave the following marks. Kingston's DTS drive is quite a lot faster in every operation. Remember that these were only synthetic benchmarks and may not necessarily reflect the real life performance. Let us see what the stop watch tests reveal.
Real Life Performance
In this test, a file sized at 373 Megabytes were transferred to the USB Flash device and then back to the hard drive. This to see both the writing and reading performance.
Write speed.
From SataII HDD to USB Flash Memory Device
| Kingston DTS | 34.9 s |
| Corsair Padlock | 50.6 s |
Read speed.
From USB Flash Memory Device to SataII HDD
| Kingston DTS | 22.1 s |
| Corsair Padlock | 21.6 s |
When it comes to reading from the device, Corsair's Padlock can hold its own. Writing speed on the other hand is totally different matter as the data shows.
Conclusion
In the end Padlock proved to be an innovative product that is both secure and very easy to operate. As the security is handled 100% on the USB device side, there are no worries that a nasty keylogger is listening the password when we enter it or a nasty hacker that could try to brute force the password. It is a rocky road to come up with new and interesting products that would also be something that users would like to use. Eventhough the dimensions of this USB Flash drive are quite large compared to other USB Memory devices in the market, I'm pretty sure that people will love this. Anything that sets one apart from the "rest of the pack" will most certainly be noticed. I believe there are many users that would like to have an easy to use and secure memory stick. Padlock might just be THE product to fulfill that need. Digg the story?! |
