In use

First of all I want to underscore that everything I mention about audio quality is subjective. Different users may have completely different preferences, so if possible, listen to the headphones before buying!
Music
The first impression of Corsair Vengeance 1500 was a bit surprising. The sound of the headphones is very neutral, which is a bit unusual for gaming headsets. Mid tones and high mid tones turned out to be very clear, maybe even a bit too clear, because in some situations, for example in vocals and hi-hat beats, the mid-tones felt slightly overemphasized. Of course this can be compensated using driver's equalizer.
Whereas the most gaming headsets I've used tend to have brain-meltingly high level of bass, Vengance 1500 plays the low frequencies in a very sophisticated way. The bass tones sound relatively flat, and even I am used to listen to very neutral headphones (AKG K 701), the sound of Vengance 1500 felt too flat, and therefore the equalizer had to be edited to fulfill my preferences. After a bit of fine tuning, the sound started to be very pleasant, especially when considering the pricetag of the headset.
Dolby Headphone mode and 7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter weren't that impressive in music, and afterall I ended up using bypass mode when listening to music. Dolby Headphone mode made a significant change to the sound by making it to sound like you are in a room listening to speakers. The effect was too extravagant even in the studio mode.
7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter didn't affect that much. Of course by changing the virtual speaker positions the sound changes substantially, but it really didn't make ane advancement to the music.
Movies and gaming
In movies and games Vengeance 1500 does a very good job. The stereo image is very clear, and you can clearly hear the direction of sound, even though there are one driver per ear cup.
This is where Dolby Headphone mode and 7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter mode kick in, as they enhance the effect of multichannel impression giving more deepness to the sound. Especially in games I liked to use Dolby Headphone mode to improve the feeling of being actually inside the game.
Microphone
The microphone was used in Skype conversations. Everyone told me that the sound is very clear. The quality is very impressive, and the microphone also nicely avoids the surrounding noise, so your friends won't be disturbed from an extra noise.
The microphone is about 6 cm away from your mouth, so it won't disturb you.
Wearing the headset
Vengeance 1500 feels very sturdy on your head, and at first that feels very comfortable. Unfortunately after about an hour they are starting to feel too squeezing and sweaty, so a little break was required. The material of ear pads is also causing a bit of itchiness. Corsair could offer another set of ear pads with 1500, for example the leather ones that are delivered with 1300.
The headband feels very good against head, and despite the downsides in the comfort, 1500 is still a lot more comfortable than many other gaming headset.
Because the ear cups are circumaular, they are isolating noises. The closed-back structure feels a lot different than an open structure, so I really recommend to try the headphones before to avoid any disappointments.
Conclusion
Corsair Vengeance 1500 is a very felicitous product. Gaming headsets have been suffering from an unaccurate frequency response with overemphasized bass. Vengeance 1500 manages to avoid these traps by having a very neutral sound. It is difficult to recommend headphones or speakers, because preferences are very subjective. Some may want to have a brain-melting bass, whereas others can't stand to sound like that. Usually I listen with AKG K 701, which are known as very neutral headphones. Vengeance 1500 has a lot of same characters in its sound, so the sound of 1500 is pretty pleasant for me. Vengeance 1500's price is very tempting being about 100 euros. In that price category it is a very good purchase, even though there are some minor drawbacks in the usage comfort. |
