Setup

Getting the headset working differs somewhat from plugging in a cord to the soundcard. Following the instructions in the manual to the point, you begin by installing the drivers and software that has been included on the driver CD. The users have the choice on which software they want to install.

The Creative installer installs the drivers for the USB headset, a Creative Mediasource-suite, the ALchemy solution, and a trial for the Creative Media Toolbox. After choosing the software to install everything should go smoothly from here. After getting the software installed everything the user has to do is plug in the USB-cord from the transceiver. Sync up the tranceiver with the headset and you should be all ready to go. That is how it's supposed to go.

At first I tried installing the headset on my main rig that has an Creative X-Fi already installed. Although the installation seemed to go just fine, the Creative volume panel wouldn't recognize the headset correctly as most of the buttons on the headset didn't work and the control panel still showed the X-Fi Xtrememusic. Even if the HS-1200 was selected as the hardware of choice.

After installing the drivers and software on another setup everything worked just fine. Seems like the Creative X-Fi Xtrememusic soundcard and the headset just didn't like each other.

The Creative ALchemy application brings the 3D-sound effects from legacy games to Windows Vista. It basically translates the DirectSound3D and EAX effect to OpenAL so that they will be played back correctly in Vista.

Use

As this was the first wireless headset that've used in a while, it really was interesting to see how well the headset compared with traditional headsets and headphones usability wise. Comfort and usability are some of the main reasons to use wireless headsets as they won't tie you next to your computer with the cord. Lets start by getting familiar with the control panel.

Here we have the main screen of the control panel and the "speakers"-tab of the control panel. Here you can configure the bass-settings for example for the headset.

Using the headset proved nice and easy to use in general use, but I did find it somewhat problematic on my main desktop-machine. I often use a separate speaker set so that I can listen to music using the speakers. The fact that the HS-1200 headset uses its own USB-soundcard, doesn't really work for people that want to use other speakers etc. on the same computer. Everytime you want to change the sound to come from the speakers, in Windows Vista you have to set the Speakers as the default playback device. Then again, when you want to use the HS-1200 headset, the device has to be changed again. This wouldn't be a problem if the headset could be connected like any normal headset, to a headphone jack etc.

Of course you can always unplug the transceiver, but then you wouldn't be able to reload the headset while using the speakers. One additional con for this headset are the possible problems with the software if you have a Creative sound card installed. This may however just be a problem on my own setup. All of these problems could have been avoided if Creative would have included the option for the users to use the headset with their existing soundcards.
