Define R2 - The looks

Fractal Design Define R2

The R2 is a stylish case, which is sophisticated like the Antec P180-series and doesn't have the usual gamer clichés like blue LEDs and mesh all over the case.

Like the P180s the Define R2 has a door that reveals the optical drives when opened. Unfortunately the door opens only 90 degrees, instead of 180 or even 270 degrees, which would have been a nice feature. Another issue with the door is that it's so close to the drive bays, that installing a fan controller with knobs is not possible or the door won't close.

Under the optical drive bays there are two slots for 120mm fans. The other one has been pre-installed with a 120 mm Fractal Design fan and the other is optional. Both of these holes have dust filters.

On the back we have the usual layout with the PSU on the bottom, expansion slots above it, the hole for the motherboard connectors and a pre-installed 120mm fan by Fractal. As you can see, the expansion slot covers are white. There are no ventilation holes in the expansion slot covers, maybe to keep the dust out and to prevent noise.

You can also see, there are four holes for water cooling pipes to pass through with rubber edges to prevent unwanted cuts or scratches on the pipes.

To keep the PSU quiet, the R2 has a thin layer of foam to prevent the PSU from vibrating against the case. There are also four rubber feet to keep the PSU off the case floor.

On the left side panel we find a hole for a 120 mm or 140 mm fan to cool the GPU area. By default it's blocked with a hard bitumen plate. At this point I'll explain the ModuVent design, it sure does sound fancy, but what does it really do?

ModuVent consists of 120 mm / 140 mm pieces of hard bitumen, that the user can install into unused fan holes to keep the dust out and make the case quieter. It's also possible for the user to choose which holes are used for the cooling system, to make it as efficient as possible. The system is something new and smart, I like it.

The right side panel is just blank metal panel.

On top of the case there's a front I/O panel with some connectors and the power button. For some reason Fractal has decided that there's no need for a reset button. There are also two holes for 120 mm or 140 mm fans. Both of these fans are optional and "ModuVented" by default. Unfortunately, the power LED is blue, but it's not as bad as most of those. Actually the ring of blue around the power button is quite cool.

The bottom of the case is identical to the Xigmatec Midgard. One fan hole for the PSU's cooler with removable dust filter and a hole for an optional 120 mm / 140 mm with an integrated dust filter.

The feet on the case are made of rubber to prevent vibrations. They are also easily removable without any tools, if the user wants so. The feet covers look metallic, but in reality it's just chromed plastic.
