The case has a total of seven fan holes, but unfortunately (like with the Midgard) Fractal Design has decided to include only two fans. Thankfully, most of the extra holes can be plugged with the ModuVent panels so dust won't get in and the case is a bit quieter. Also if with up to 7 fans were included the rather cheap Define R2 would cost considerably more.

The two included fans are stylish Fractal Design black and white fans. The Fractal Design Silent Series 120 mm fans run at 12V (1000 RPM) and they should be able to move air at a rate of 65 cubic meters per hour (38.30 CFM). As a nice detail the fan cables are sleeved.

The included fan controller is a very basic model, which can control upto 3 fans simultaneously, and it is preinstalled into one of the expansion slots of the case It does its job without a problem, but the position on the back of the case may be a bit hard to reach. Yet again its specs are identical to the Xigmatec Midgard and its plugged straight to a Molex connector.

Installation

Installing the PSU and motherboard is as easy as usual. Like seen earlier, the case has whopping eight HDD-sleds made of steel. Again, unsurprisingly, the sledges are identical to the Midgards sleds, so unsurprisingly the installation process is the same. The sleds have holes for both, 3.5" and 2.5" HDDs. The 3.5" holes also have rubber grommets to eliminate vibrations.

Unfortunately, the frame is somewhat badly painted, so the white sleds get black stripes to the sides even on the first installation. To be brutally honest, the paint job isn.t too good anywhere. It scratches very easily all around the case, maybe because of a bit too thin layer of paint.

The Velcro straps work quite well, although they are a bit long, so cutting the leftover Velcro does make the assembly look better. Being able to reuse the straps is always a plus, so points for the Define R2 here.

Inside, even after the installation, the R2 is quite spacious. Sometimes with midi-towers there's a problem with lack of room, but this is an exception. The PSU-compartment on the bottom is also very roomy and big enough for longer PSUs. Everything worked fine, except the thumb screws for the optical drives, that were a bit too big for my drive. Sorry for the bad job with 24 pin and 8 pin connectors, but Thermal Take has made its cables too short.

Speaking of cable management, the rubber covers for the cable management holes are a bit flimsy and come off a bit too easily for my taste.

On the back side of the tray we have more cable managing, but also some unused cable management holes. The hole for installing CPU cooler is a perfect match, an improvement from the Midgard.
