Software

The VFD and the remote are again made by Soundgraph and thus use the iMon software we've already seen with many HTPC cases earlier. The bundle contains two programs; iMon and iMedian. The iMon is the one that controls the VFD and with which one can tweak the settings of the remote controller and the iMedian is a media center-utility that can be used to watch recorded TV programs and listen to music. This bundle contains everything needed to turn your XP/Vista PC into a mediaPC.

Conclusion
The AVC-S7 has some major differencies to the HTPC-cases we've tested earlier. This is the first one not to use full-size ATX power supply, which has made it possible to decrease the height of the case significantly. The single card slot is also a new sight, and may cause issues, because it means the user has to decide between TV-card and a proper sound card. These things are the price to pay for small size, because there simply is no room for more cards. As with the AVC-K1 all the features work nicely, VFD screen shows what you want it to, and the remote controller can be configured to work with the programs of your choice. But then comes the real downside of the AVC-S7 - the noise. I don't know what they were thinking at GMC when they put that PSU on a HTPC case. It quite simply has too many fans running at too high speeds. Because the fans are only 60 mm, they don't produce that much of an airflow, so the PSU fans alone can't replace the need for the case fans. |
