5-series
With the HD6-series cards due to launch later this year, the HD5-family is still the top dog in Ati's range of graphic cards. In this current range of gaming graphic cards the HD5870 is the second fastest card, right after the dual-GPU monster that is the HD5970.
HD5870

The HD5870 is the second largest card in the Ati's current range of cards, and indeed quite massive. HIS has changed both the PCB and the cooler on the card. The cooler has a single large fan and a fan shroud featuring some more Modern Warfare 2-artwork. HIS claims the new cooler design to keep the core both cooler and be quieter in operation than the stock cooler.

As usual, all the memory chips are on the front side of the card, hidden under the cooler. The cooler has a sturdy support plate and there are two crossfire-connectors at the top.

The front panel covers all the currently used connections, there are two DVI-I's and a single HDMI as well as a Display Port.

As said earlier, HIS has changed the layout, and in the progress have also made the PCB a bit shorter. Anyway they've also moved the two 6-pin power connectors from the side of the card to the end, which again means the connectors and cables will add to the overall length and mean the card will require just as much room as the reference design HD5870.

Without its cooler the HD5870 isn't quite as impressive sight. The eight memory chips surround the Cypress core and there's a large heat sink for the power supply components.
