Looking at the power consumption makes the HD5870's performance look all the more impressive. In idle it consumes barely over 100 watts and at load 340 W. Comparing to the last generation top of the line single GPU card, the HD4890, it only consumes 36 W under load more, and at idle almost 50 watts less! Also comparing over to what Nvidia has to offer, the similarly performing GTX 470 draws 57 W more at load.

  • Quiet
  • Shorter PCB...

  • Award
    Gold Award!

Overall the HIS HD5870 proved to be an excellent performer. It won most of the test, leaving the Nvidia's competing GTX 470 as well as the HD 5770 crossfire behind. This is even more impressive when looking at the power consumption, the slightly lower performing GTX 470 consumes more power. HIS has also done good work with the cooler. The HD5-series reference coolers haven't been half bad to begin with, but the large fan on the HIS design means it stays pleasingly quiet even when gaming. The shorter PCB may also help fitting the card into smaller cases.
