Overclocking

Our sample of the HD6870 proved to be an awful overclocker, as it started crashing and developing graphics bugs at even the slightest of OC. We only managed to rise the clock speed from 920 MHz to 945 MHz, rising the memory clock speed instantly caused problems in the tests. This sort of rise isn't really worthwhile as it isn't going to give a noticeable improvement in games.

On paper the HD6850s should be good overclockers, as they use pretty much the same Barts-core as the HD6870, but run at much lower clock speeds. In practice they also proved much more rewarding to overclock, as the improvements here were very impressive. On both cards we were able to max the core speed available on the Catalyst Control Panel, meaning 900/1160 MHz on the IceQ X and 850/1105 MHz on the normal HD6850. These improvements are rather impressive results and enough to boost the value for money of these cards.
