Overclocking continued
Intel Core i7 870
Default settings
Just like the i5 750, the i7 870 has the Intel Turbo Boost feature, here we can see it overclocking the CPU to 3.2 GHz, but depending on the load it can go even higher.
OC Genie settings
With the i7 870, the OC Genie had a nice impact on performance. Pressing the magic-button resulted in a overclock, from 2.93 GHz, all the way to 3.98 Ghz with a base-clock of 209 MHz. Just like with the i5, the memory was once again underclocked by the OC-Genie. Overall, this is a good improvement over the default settings.
Max OC settings
Once again I tried my best to improve on the results that the OC Genie got. This time I ended up with a final CPU frequency of 4.25 GHz with the memory clocks going all the way up to 1012 MHz. The command rate was however changed to 2T from 1T in order to sustain stability.
Overclocking in general with the P55-GD80
Overclocking in general with the MSI P55-GD80 was a breeze. I didn't run into any problems with the hardware and even the windows-based control panel worked flawlessly. The BIOS was clear enough to use, and even though I haven't played that much with the newer i5 and i7 CPUs, the experience was rewarding.
The highest base-clocks which I got with this motherboard were around the 210 MHz mark with the i7 870. Due to the lack of a comparable motherboard, I can't be completely sure if the motherboard or the CPU is the limiting factor this time.
