Noctua NH-C14 & NH-D14 Coolers - CPU air cooling at its best

We've usually tested the heat sinks using AMD-based test beds, but this time we swapped over to Intel and used the same LGA1156-based system also used for graphic card benchmarking. To get comparison for the Noctua coolers, we also ran the same tests using Thermalright MUX-120 cooler as well as the Thermaltake Frio OCK we've reviewed earlier.

The tests were ran on an open air test bench and for the load-temperatures the CPU was stressed with Intel Burntest. All coolers were installed using the same NT-H1 thermal paste and during the tests the ambient temperature was 23°C.

All of these four coolers are very high performance models and in the test also proved to be very close to each other. The winner here is the Noctua NH-D14, but the NH-C14 comes second, with just 0,25°C difference. Also the MUX-120 is left behind by just half a degree, while the Frio OCK loses by 2,75°C.

When noise levels are added to the mix, it's again the same three coolers at the lead. Really the Noctua- and Thermalright coolers are all very, very quiet, while the Frio OCK is terribly noisy at full speed.

Conclusion

PROS
  • Installation
  • Quiet fans
  • Bundle

    CONS
  • Huge size may cause compatibility issues
  • Award
    Editor's Choice Award!

Noctua is known for the high quality of their cooling products and the current flagships of the range really aren't letting the reputation down. Both models are very nicely finished, come with good mounting hardware for all platforms and also a pair of good fans. Premium coolers tend to come with premium price tags and the Noctuas aren't exactly cheap, either, but the quality fans and ease of use really make up for the price.

Performance-wise both models are right up there with the previous king of the hill - Thermaltake Frio OCK - and also the Thermalright MUX-120. They also offer these temperature results while being much quieter than the Frio, so overall both coolers perform excellently.

The choice between the C14 and D14 boils down to the overall airflow of your case, but which ever of these coolers you choose, you know you're getting one of the best air coolers on the market.
