Crysis Warhead
"Pulse-racing new installment from 2007's PC Game of the Year*: Play as Sergeant Sykes and experience a whole new side of the battle. A standard combat mission behind enemy lines becomes critical when you discover your enemies have captured something of vital importance to the ensuing war. It's down to you to retrieve the cargo, at any cost.
More explosive and dynamic minute to minute game play: new customizable weapons, new vehicles, new photorealistic locations to explore, and a fully interactive war zone to dominate."

As Crysis has always been a weak-point of the AMD products, it was interesting to see how this new product fared in the benchmark. The card actually didn't let us down as it was somewhat slower than it bigger siblings at the benchmarks which didn't have AA on, but as AA was enabled, the HD 4770 shot in front of the HD 4850 GS with the 1680 x 1050 resolution and it actually passed the HD 4870 at the highest resolution. The FPS were however still not even close to being playable at any setting as they topped out at 22.15 FPS.
Far Cry 2
"Far Cry® 2, the next-generation first-person shooter from Ubisoft, will take you deep into the most beautiful but also most hostile environments in the world: Africa! More than just a visual and technological achievement, Far Cry® 2, the true sequel to the award-winning PC game, will provide you with an unprecedented gaming experience."

Just like Crysis, Far Cry 2 really has not been the strong-point of the AMD cards. Here the HD 4770 follows the HD4850 closely in every separate benchmark.
Conclusion
It was refreshing to see that the lower-end cards can pack some nice punch, as the HD 4770 proved. The only problem with the card is its current low availability, as TMSC seems to have struggled with their 40 nm process, which in turn has resulted in low yields for the RV740 chip. This means that AMD really cannot deliver all of the chips they'd like. After the yield issues have resided, which hopefully happens soon, as the new generation of graphic cards are going to use the process in question, the availability should improve. The performance/price ratio really is in order with this product and we can recommend the HD 4770 to everyone which is looking for a fairly cheap card that can still pack a punch. |
