Sapphire HD 5750 Vapor-X - Gaming on a budget

With two cards around the power consumption tests reveal some very accurate numbers of the actual power draw of the cards. Here one can see a mere 20 W difference between a single card and crossfire setup on idle, in load the difference is 110 W. The idle wattage follows Ati's specified 16/86 watts pretty closely, but the 24 W difference under load sounds like a lot. Overclocking also increased the power draw by 10 watts under full load, and also bumped the core temperature up by five degrees.

Noise

On idle the fan on the Vapor-X cooler is very quiet, and so it should be as the card only uses some 20 watts of power. Under load it slowly ramps up, and becomes more clearly audible, but normally I still wouldn't call the cooler loud. For the temperature tests we manually set the fan to run at 100% and at that setting the sound of air rushing through the heatsink became disturbingly loud.

Conclusion

PROS
  • Availability
  • Overclocking
  • Crossfire performance
  • Supports up to three displays

  • CONS
  • Price compared to HD5770
  • Cooler does not blow warm air out from the case
  • Award
    Silver Award!

ATI's whole 5-range of graphic cards seems to be performing great, and while doing that the new series also seems to draw less power than the old ones. Good job all round! The higher end models have had serious availability issues, but these lower end 5770 and 5750 cards are readily available at reasonable prices. This is also the price range for affordable gaming rig, and from what I've seen the Sapphire Vapor-X HD5750 will be a good choice for many budget gamers out there.

The stock performance of the card is already pretty decent, but on top of that the HD5750 also proved to be a good overclocker. With the cool and quiet Vapor-X cooler I can warmly recommend pushing the clock speeds higher up, in any half-decent case the temperatures are not going to be an issue. Really the only nag I have with the card is also about the cooler, it would be even better if it pushed the hot air straight out of the case rather than just circulated the same air around.
