Layout

Shuttle AN50R

Because of blue PCB, motherboards external appearance is splendid, but not harsh. Nicely coloured DIMM slots and IDE connectors give their own extra to motherboards overall look. Colours aren’t however most interesting things on Shuttle AN50R. Most attention draws the unique layout of AN50R, which is a quite different compared to most other motherboards because of the one chip chipset. Processor socket is located in the middle of motherboards upper half while nForce 3 150 chipset is on the lower part of motherboard.

AGP & DIMM slots

There is lots of empty space between AGP and DIMM slots, which helps installation process of memory modules even if long display adapter is on its place at AGP slot. The way it should be but isn't usually.

View from lower part of the motherboard

Lower part of the PCB is quite ordinary looking. Perhaps most visible detail is a little passive heat sink on nForce 3 150 chipset. SATA ports have been located very near of the last PCI slot. Problem occurs when you have long PCI card installed on slot and you have to plug SATA cables on their place. Other possible problem is that tall ATX full towers may have 3.5" drive bays at the very top of the tower and with Shuttle AN50R you are going to need extra long SATA cables, which are hard to find.

Yellow jumper at the picture is CMOS clear jumper, which is located nicely. Onboard power and reset switches are also visible on the bottom part of the image.

Connectors

Handsome line of colourful connector provides us this weeks nature photo. First in the row are connectors for power and reset switches, HDD and power LEDs and so on next there are IR and USB connectors. Behind the black SATA ports there are few audio connectors and yellow Firewire connectors. On the horizon shimmers two black hills, which are actually Firewire and audio controllers.

More Connectors

IDE and floppy drive connectors can be found on their usual locations as well as ATX power connector.

Closeup

Colour coded connectors for power, reset and other connectors are always welcome. It’s also easy to spot onboard power and reset connector from this picture. Just at the left end of the picture one can spot HDD LED, which cannot be turned off. Rounded PCB corners are these days usual view.

Overall I think that AN50Rs layout is quite spacious and there isn’t very much room for criticism. One main reason for that is one chip nForce 3 150 chipset, which leave much space especially at the upper part of PCB. Despite of various integrated features AN50R doesn’t look full packed and even these things matter a little how motherboard actually performs and works, good and spacious layout often helps installation process and even actual use.

Power circuitry

Power circuitry

Three-phased processor power circuitry is controlled by ISL6559CB. In this challenging job it has support from seven RLX-labelled 3300uF 10V and four RLX-labelled 1500uF 16V capacitors. 12V power connector is placed on its right position near power circuitry. Shuttle has also placed temperature sensor near power circuitry, which monitors PWM temperature.
