Overclocking

There is no doubt that nForce 3 150 is "the" chipset when it comes to overclocking Athlon 64 processors. This is mainly due the fixed AGP and PCI clocks. However not every product is perfect and on this case problems were memory related. I tried various different memory modules and only few of them could work over 200MHz. One-sided Kingston HyperX memory modules worked flawlessly, but even them only at CAS 2.5 settings.

Overclocking with AN50R was easy job after I found suitable memory module for overclocking. Motherboard didn’t have any problems achieve over 300MHz FSBs if HyperTransport bus speed was kept close to 600MHz. So with some help of the voltage mods and Mach II cooling system motherboard was ready for serious overclocking. With ClockGen program FSB and processor multiplier can be adjusted on the Windows desktop so overclocking is easiest with it rather than on BIOS.

Highest FSB that Shuttle AN50R could achieve was 351MHz. On the screenshot one can spot also that on some situations memory divider is not 1:1 even if it should be. So if you are using multipliers like 8.5x, 9.5x and so on, memory controller uses dividers and this is case even on some lower multiplier like 4x. So no, memory wasn’t running at 351MHz even if Cpu-Z so reports.

In the end best overclocking result was 2744MHz. This was achieved with AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor, which overclocked better than 3400+ that were used on other tests. I think that this is quite good result although I had very hard time to find suitable memory module for overclocking.

Conclusion

Shuttle AN50R

PROS
  • Overclockability
  • Integrated features

  • CONS
  • Compatiblity with some memories

  • Expectations were high when Shuttle AN50R arrived to our test lab and it managed to fill them quite nicely. AN50R hasn’t actually been award winning and highly praised motherboard on various reviews that have been floating over the net, but many users who have bought this motherboard have been very happy with it. I can say that during our very long test period Shuttle AN50R have impressed me in various ways. It’s overclockability, performance and integrated features, except audio, are top quality.

Shuttle AN50Rs layout and features are mainly good. But few extra SATA ports wouldn’t hurt. Especially overclocking features are top quality although hardcore overclockers have to do some modifications to achieve higher voltages.

Biggest problems on Shuttle AN50R were memory compatibility related. It could be possible that new stepping of the Athlon 64 processors could correct this problem since memory controller is after all in the processor core. Only time will tell.
