Inside

Now that we've seen what the outside of the case looks like, lets crack the case open and see what the insides hold. The SFF-cases tend to be much trickier to set up than normal ATX-cases, and the SG05 also needs to be disassembled before the actual assembly can take place. The user manual comes with installation guide, so this step is pretty straight forward.

To kick things off, we take off the cover of the case. This happens by removing four screws from the back of the case and by sliding the entire cover back a small amount. After this you can just lift the cover off. I was actually surprised on how flimsy the cover really is. One really has to be careful with it, as it will bend into unwanted shapes much easier than you might think.

Now that the cover is off, we can see what the insides of the case look like. Unfortunately SilverStone has chosen not to paint or powdercoat the main parts of the chassis. This means that the gray parts of the case can be easily seen through the ventilation holes of the case. A completely black case, inside and out, really would have been more appealing, but I suppose the sacrifice was made to keep the cost down.

With the cover removed, we can move on with disassembling the case. The next part which the installation guide tells us to remove is the 3.5" drive bay. It is simply removed by unscrewing two small screws and by pulling it out from the side.

Now that the 3.5" drive bay is out of the way, we have to remove the front bezel in order to get to some screws which hold the other drive cage in place. The front bezel is held on with 6 small tabs which unfortunately look like they may or may not survive for that long if you have to remove the front bezel often. The tabs are also fairly small and a screwdriver of sorts may come in handy when pushing the in.

The front fan also has a dust filter which should prevent at least most of the dust from entering through the front. Cleaning the dust filter whilst in use requires removing the case's cover and clipping off the front bezel. While the dust filter is a nice feature and the approach works, cleaning the filter could have been made easier.

Here we have the front bezel taken off the case. Unfortunately the bezel of the SG05 is made of plastic, but if you really want an aluminum front bezel then there's also the otherwise very similar SST-SG06 model that comes with one.

The last part to come off the case is the second drive-cage which has the places for the 2.5" HDD and the slim-CD/DVD-drive. The 2.5" HDD is attached in the compartment which is located on the bottom of the cage and the DVD-drive goes on top of the cage. In order to install the DVD-drive, you also have to remove the blanking-plates which are found both on the chassis, and the front bezel.

To remove the cage, you need to unscrew four screws, two from the front and two on the top. After that the cage comes free so you can remove it from the case.
