Assembly finished

With the power supply in place, things start to get a bit more chaotic inside the case. If you are getting a whole new setup instead of using the SG03 to house existing parts, I strongly recommend getting a modular power supply. There simply is no room for all the extra cables of the Silverstone SST-ST56F power supply we used. Getting the support/3,5" bracket in place was also hard as it wasn't taken into consideration when routing the cables. With all the stuff in place the case weighted 9,1 kg according to a person scale.
In use

The CPU temperatures didn't get actually alarmingly high, but for a E2160 these are a bit on the high side. The power supply used has a temperature controlled fan that was barely spinning at all so the cooler was working in very low airflow situation. This connection between the power supply fan speed and CPU temperature may be one of the letdowns of the SG03, do the PSU fans really run fast enough to keep faster CPUs cool?
Noise
With only one case fan there's not much to say about the noise. The single fan runs at around 1300 times per minute and makes a fair amount of airflow and also some noise. It's not disturbingly loud, but with a chance provided would definitely lower the speed to under 1000 RPM.
Conclusion
Silverstone has aimed at markets of very small and stylish cases and have really hit the spot with the SG03. It's impossible to say how many potential buyers there are for this kind of cases, but if you're looking for a very small and light weight case then you better have a look at the SG03. For such a small case also having room for two 120 mm fans is a nice achievement that should be able to keep even hotter components cool. Also the clever HDD-cages deserve to be specially mentioned. It's not easy to point out downsides in the SG03, but there are a couple that really got my attention. First of all the lack of aluminum bezel for the optical drive. In black cases a black optical drive may look relatively nice, but there just are no drives out there that would look nice on the aluminum front panel. The second problem is the fan that can't be controlled. Just by changing the molex connector to a 3-pin fan connector Silverstone could make the fan easily adjustable, but as of now, it always runs at full speed and causes unwanted noise. However these two problems aren't enough to ruin the overall quality touch of the case. The SG03 is a great SFF case and really deserves our Editors Choice-award. |
