Xigmatek Midgard - External look

Xigmatek Midgard Case Review

A general look around the case quickly reveals that it indeed is one of the hugely ventilated gaming cases that seem to be very common these days. The majority of both the front panel and the roof are covered in steel mesh, and there are also ventilation holes on both side panels. While the front panel connectors are on their normal place in the front panel, the power- and reset buttons have been moved to the roof.

As mentioned, the front panel is almost entirely covered in steel mesh. On the top there are five 5,25" drive bays, of which the bottom-most comes with an adapter for an external 3,5" device. Under the drive bays there are the front panel connectors - two USBs, e-SATA and headphone- and microphone-connectors. Under the connectors there's some more mesh covering the 120 mm intake fan.

Behind the case everything looks very familiar as well. The power supply gets mounted to the bottom and there's even a thin layer of foam to prevent vibrations from the PSU making their way to the case. Above the PSU there are the seven expansion slot covers with no ventilation holes and at the top there's another 120 mm fan.

On Xigmatek's feature list the case is supposed to have four holes with rubber covers for water cooling hoses, but I can only see four holes blocked with some steel. One shouldn't lie to the customers...

With so many fan slots available in the case, it's no surprise that there are also holes for two optional fans on the left side panel. The "CPU"-fan hole can take fans between 80 and 140 mm in diameter, while the bottom "GPU"-hole has mounting holes for 120 and 140 mm fans. Xigmatek also has a windowed side panel for the Midgard, but our test sample came without one.

More ventilation holes on the right side. The one on the bottom-left is located right behind the HDD cage and the one on the upper-right corner sits behind the CPU-slot. Neither of these have mounting holes for fans.

As with most gaming-cases we've tested, also the Midgard has an additional plastic bezel over the actual steel frame. Just like the front panel, also the roof bezel is mainly covered in steel mesh. On the front of the roof there's the power- and reset buttons and between these there are power and reset leds. Now this may be a minor detail, but I can't remember when was the last time I've seen basic green and red leds being used in a PC-case. For the last couple of years we've mainly seen various levels of blindingly bright blue.

The bottom reveals even more ventilation holes! This time around there's a hole for the power supply, and the hole even comes with an easily removable dust filter that can be accessed from behind the case. In front of that there's also a hole for an additional 120/140 mm fan. The feet are mainly plastic and feel and look pretty cheap, but atleast they come with soft foam bases for some vibration dampening.
