Internal layout

Xigmatek Midgard Case Review

Opening the side panel proved to provide a huge deja vú, as the internal layout is practically identical to that of the CM Storm Sniper we reviewed earlier. Everything from the optional bottom fan to the PCI-slot quick release locks seem strangely familiar. There's room for graphic cards up to 30 centimeters in pcb-lenght. As mentioned already in the intro, this is Xigmatek's first step into the case markets, so I guess using a well-established layout makes sense. They also deserve some credit for using tool-less locks for all drive bays as well as the PCI-slots.

As to remind even more of the Sniper, the roof has yet another two fan holes. Sadly for water coolers though, these holes are designed to fit both 120 and 140 mm fans, so a "standard" 240 mm rad can't be just bolted in there. Having two 120 mm fans side by side is enough to make a case "water cooling friendly" in the eyes of many customers, so I would have liked to see some other design being used for these fan holes.

Behind the right side panel there isn't much to see, the only important things here are the holes for cable routing and a hole to make installing CPU-coolers easier. Unlike usually, there are also quick locks for the optical drives on this side of the case.

The front panel is held in place with some plastic tabs and can be simply pulled away, as the front panel connectors are actually mounted to the frame. While this isn't too hard to do, it still seems like a lot of work when you just want to clean the dust filter of the front fan. On the other hand, the case is so full of non-filtered ventilation holes, the filters for the front fan and the PSU seem kinda out of place to begin with.

Despite the numerous fan holes, the case only comes with two 120 mm fans installed. This may seem like a bit of a cheat, but then again, the case comes at a very affordable price gap and thus can't really be directly compared with the other gamers' cases we've tested. The two fans that do come with the case follow Xigmatek's orange-on-black color theme and are specified at 12 V 0,1 A (1,2 W).

The fan controller that comes in the bundle is designed to control up to three fans with three-pin power connectors. Unfortunately the controller gets plugged in directly to the power supply, so if you use it, you will not be able to follow the fan speeds, or use any on-board fan controllers on the motherboard.
