CNPS10X Extreme

Make no mistake, the CNPS10X is a huge cooler. At 160 mm tall and 135 mm wide it's size-wise right up there with the current top dogs of the CPU-cooling. It also feels surprisingly heavy, and it indeed weights a good third more than the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 that otherwise fits in the same category. The "Black-pearl" nickel plating also makes the aluminum fins look very attractive, and those combined with the what-will-be a blue led fan, the Extreme sure is a looker.

From this side shot one can see how much the cooler overlaps the CPU-area. Now this is nothing new with these tower heatsinks, but with also the heatpipes curving outwards right after leaving the copper base, there may be some compatibility issues ahead with certain motherboards. With there motherboards the fan may also interfere with the memory slot closest to the CPU socket.

The fins are very closely spaced, which generally means that there's a lot of dissipation area and also that the cooler is not going to work too well at low fan speeds, as pushing air through such small gaps requires some pressure. Here one can also see how two of the five heatpipes go through the fins closer to the middle than the three others.

The CNPS10X Extreme comes with an integrated fan controller. This is Zalman's own PWM-Mate and in appearance seem to follow quite closely the very popular fan mate. It may seem weird to have the fan controller on board the cooler, but that's exactly the reason why there was an extension cable in the bundle.

Now that's more like it. The extension cable is 80 centimeters in length and should be enough for you to get the PWM mate right where you want it to be. Zalman also was thoughtful enough to add some double-sided tape in the bundle to make fastening the fan controller a breeze.
