CNPS10X Extreme

Just like the aluminum fins, also the copper heatpipes and the base come with the nice looking black-pearl nickel plating. The base is polished to mirror finish and couldn't be better.

With the fan out of the way, one can see the profile of the heatsink itself. The center of the heatsink is on a slight concave as so to decrease the effect of the blind spot on the center of the fan. The fan on the Extreme isn't quite standard and actually slides straight to a male fan connector on the top shroud of the cooler. This actually seems a bit over-engineered and in practice makes replacing the fan quite difficult.

For a CPU cooler the Extreme is a bit of a puzzle to pry apart. First of all the fan comes off with some screws, then the top part with two more screws and some clips and finally the shroud is held in place with four clips that turned out to be quite tricky to release. Unfortunately there are no vibration dampeners in the whole setup.

The actual fan is less surprisingly Zalman's own product and relies on double ball bearings. It's specified at surprisingly high 12 V 0,40 A (3 W) and 1,000 - 2,150 RPM. The specified noise is 20 - 39 dBA which also seems pretty high, but one has to remember there's also the CNPS10X Quiet version that comes with a slower and therefore quieter fan.
