Intro
In our first CPU review in a long while we'll take a look at the AMD Phenom 2 X4 965 Black Edition. Now the
965BE has been out for a while already, but 4.11. AMD launched a new version of the chip, now using the C3
stepping. With the new stepping comes lower TDP and supposedly better overclocking capabilites as well. Now
lets see what the AMD's new flagship processor has to offer.

The 965BE did not only bump up the clock speed of the Phenoms by yet another 200 MHz, it's also the
highest clock speed AMD processor ever released. Also it has the highest clock speed of any quad core
processor on the markets now.
So then, what exactly is new in the C3 revision? The clock speed remains the same, as does the price and
indeed most of the changes are related to the efficiency of the processor. First of all there's the 15 W drop
in TDP, coming from 140 Watts down to 125 W. Then there's the C1E which allows the chip to throttle down and
change between power states. There's also some improvements in the memory controller, and AMD claims the new
revision to work well with four 1333 MHz DDR3 memory sticks.
