AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition - Upgraded power from AMD

The main thing about these new Phenoms is to up the clock speed, while keeping the TDP same with the previous version. The 980 does this at stock speed, using the same amount of power as the versions from 965 and 975. When overclocked we used the same Vcore of 1,45 V as before, so again the wattage is the same as with the 970BE. The difference here ofcourse is that at the same Vcore the 980BE stretched to 200 MHz higher clock speed.

There isn't really anything ground breaking about the 980. It uses the same Deneb core as the earlier quads we've reviewed, and the performance is exactly what we expected. A bit higher than the previous 3,6 GHz flag ship Phenom X4 975. In the overclocking tests the 980 managed to score a 200 MHz higher stable clock speed than the earlier editions. That said, with a sample size of just a couple of processors it can't be said for certain if the 980 indeed is better, or if we just got a better clocking sample than with the previous CPUs.
