Noise
Being unable to install the quiet CPU-cooler was a hard blow for the noise tests. Other than the fan in the AMD boxed cooler, the system contains two large 120 mm fans and a slow-running 80 mm Adda in the power supply. The Antec TriCool have been a standard fan to come with all Antec cases for quite a while already, so there's no reason to analyse them too deeply once again. The manual tells the three speeds to be 1200, 1600 and 2000 RPM and the according noise levels to be 25, 28 and 30 dBA. A bit of heavy noise absorbing/vibration dampening mat here and there might further improve the noise characteristics of the case as the panels seem to create some sort of echo and amplify the noise of the fans.
Verdict here is that even while the fans aren't what you would call noisy at the slowest setting, one will definitely hear them while watching a movie. So if you're after a silent HTPC then you better replace the TriCools with something more quiet, or just further slow them down with an external fancontroller.

Conclusion
All in all the second version of the Fusion is a very good looking HTPC-case with expectionally good ventilation and all the necessary features. Thanks to the double 120 mm fan places, it's easy to build a quiet setup to this case. Even though there's no room for large CPU heatsinks, the airflow on the CPU-area is so good, even a smaller cooler will perform well. Only real reason that I can see why this case wouldn't be an excellent choise for HTPC use, is the fact that the remote control doesn't come bundled with the case. |
