Heatpipes seem to be 'hip' these days. Almost every cooler that is meant to be used in extreme conditions are equipped at least two of them. Cooler Master's Hyper 48 is no exception. It offers four heatpipes to carry all that heat from the base of the cooler to the fin tips where it can be cooled of more efficiently. We have seen this technique to give good performance results (Hyper 6) but will this latest piece of cooling hardware from Cooler Master be up to the task. Read on and find out.

Inside the package we find the following items:

  • Hyper 48 Multiplatform Cooler
  • Installation manual
  • LGA 775 Retention Bracket and Back Plate
  • P4 & K8 Universal Retention Bracket and Back Plate
  • Spring Clips
  • Thermal Grease
  • Screws for installation on LGA 775, P4 and K8 setups
  • Cooler Master Aluminum sticker
  • (3- to 4-pin power adapter)

As you may have already figured out, this cooler can be used with multiple socket types; Intel Pentium 4 (Socket 478 and LGA 775) and AMD Athlon / Athlon XP / Athlon FX series (Socket 754/939/940). Making cooler to be usable with all the major formats, Cooler Master ensures that you don't need to buy another cooler when upgrading your setup or changing the CPU manufacturer. It is also easier to choose a new cooler when you have only one resonable priced high performer to choose from.

While the package should include the 3- to 4-pin adapter, I failed to spot one with our sample. All in all the bundle is what you can expect from a multiplatform cooler and I don't feel that it should be topped with anything else. That would usually lead to higher price anyway. ;)
