Lian-Li Tyr PC-X2000 Aluminum Gaming and HTPC Case

Testing

Our mid-spec test rig should already be familiar for most old readers out there, but here are the specs once again:

• Motherboard: Abit IP35
• Processor: C2D E6750 @ 3 GHz (Xigmatek HDT-S1283)
• Memory: 2*1 GB 800 MHz
• Graphic card: Gainward Bliss 8800GT 1024 MB
• Power Supply: Silverstone Decathlon DA700
• Storage: Three Seagate hard drives and a DVD-drive

As with the Antec 300 and 1200 cases, our test bed quite simply doesn't produce enough heat to give any challenge to the cooling of these gaming cases. Because of the great ventilation, the air inside the case simply doesn't heat up and, the delta temperature between the part and the air temperature remaining the same, the parts don't heat up either. There are only differencies of a couple of degrees in the idle temperatures and in real-life enviroment these aren't gonna make any difference.

Noise

In use the power led is blue and the HDD led blinks in red, both are only bright enough to be visible

Aluminum cases aren't usually connected to quiet computing, and there's a reason for this expection. Aluminum is a light weight material and by itself doesn't dampen the noise or the vibrations too well. This may be the situation with some aluminum cases, but Lian-Li has already before made quiet cases and also advertises the TYR PC-X2000 as one.

The three-speed fan controller is factory-set to medium, which already will be acceptable for most users in day-time use when the ambient noise level is at its highest. The low-setting should please also users with higher requirements, but it still doesn't make the fans silent by any means. Even if the noise still is apparant in night-time, I were very pleased with the lowest fan speedand even more pleased when it came apparent that there won't be any significant rise in the temperatures. The high-setting will definitely cool even the craziest hardware, but also gives a loud sound of air rushing through the case. Even at the highest speed the noise remains within reasonable limits so I'd say that noise-wise the case is a success.

It's a bit hard to give this case any real rating, because there simply aren't many competitors in its price range. Also one can't really say what goals a high-end case should achieve? Perfection? However in the end it doesn't really matter what the goals might be for cases in this price range, because the Tyr PC-X2000 is likely to reach more or them. Nice stylish outlooks, overall good finishing, handy features and very effective yet reasonably quiet cooling. Some of the features, especially the motherboard tray, still have some room for improvements, but overall the flaws are very minor and only make the installation slightly harder.
