Tritton PC510HDA 5.1 Headset - Analog Gaming Headset with 5.1 3D sound

The PC 510 HDA is an analog headset so no drivers are needed, just plug in the color coded connectors and you're good to go. The use experience was split into two categories: music and gaming, because obviously this set, being surround and all, is more aimed at games than music.

I must admit I've always been somewhat sceptical about surround headphones, as I've never really felt like stereo headphones didn't give enough positional clues. Anyway likewise I must admit that I was positively surprised with the PC510HDA, in games sounds really do come from different direcitons, and with the individual controls you can tweak the effect to your liking. Some sounds, for example the choppers in BF:BC2 sounded crazy loud, which leaves to expect the frequency response isn't actually flat, but other than that the headset was great for gaming.

Anyway if you're like me, you don't only use the headphones for gaming, but also for music, and this is where things go wrong. The sound quality just isn't as high as I'd hoped, it's the same problem with general muddiness we've already heard with some other gaming headsets. In games this just isn't such a problem, but especially woman vocalists highlight the problem and make the listening experience rather tiresome.

    Silver Award!

The Tritton headset is a bit of a mixed bag and it's hard to really decide on the award. First of all lets start from the physical aspects. Despite the plastic construction the PC 510 HDA is a very sturdy headset and it's also very comfortable to wear. The controller is a bit clumsy, but really you usually don't need to adjust anything anyway, so it's all OK.

Tritton is mainly known for gaming gear and this is definitely no expection, everything about the sound is aimed at gaming rather than music. The 5.1 surround works well in games and the effects sound very nice. Anyway when you switch over to music, the headset isn't nearly as nice, as the frequency response is far from flat and far from the overall clarity provided by our reigning favorite, the Corsair HS1A.

Bottom line being that if it's solely gaming you need the headset for, the PC 510 HDA is a good choice, but if you also plan to use them with music, I suggest also looking at other choices.
