My Book Essential 3 TB
As already said, the My Book looks very much like the World Edition, it's a very compact, book-like thing mainly made from shiny black plastic. Now we don't usually like this shiny "finger print"-finish too much, but you don't really have any need to touch or move the drive around, so for once it works well. On the front there's a small WD-badge and above that is a small, white power LED.
Just like the World Edition, also the Essential lacks cooling fans, and instead the case is just ventilated around the bottom, top and rear. Under the large ventilation hole there's a power button, the USB 3.0 micro connector, power connector and also a slot for a Kensington lock.
The entire bottom is used as a ventilation hole, and there are two rubber feet keeping the drive in place.
The housing comes apart by carefully sliding the inner frame out through the back. Inside is the 3 TB Green hard drive suspended from its corners by pieces of rubber. Attached to the hard drive is the S-ATA - USB 3.0 bridge chip and the required power circuitry. For those interested, the chip doing the actual work here is SW6316 by SMSC.
