IntroI bought an old 15" tft display from my friend because the display of my laptop didn't offer enough workspace. This monitor just happened to be too ugly to be tolerated for long. I never had the guts to modify my laptop, so this new screen of mine offered a great opportunity to refresh my building skills. I turned some of my ideas into a 3d model to see how they look. The leading idea was to show the parts of the tft and of course: it shouldn't be too hard to build. |
Plans
The manufacturer and the model of the monitor is Samtron 51S. The rightmost picture is made with 3D Studio while the two on the left show the tft unmodified. 3d render turned out to resemble the looks of the finished 'product' quite a lot.
Still working
First step was to remove the plastic covers of the screen. That wasn't too hard due to only one screw holding it together. After each step I tested if the panel was still working properly.

Panel from behind
Wires on the left belong to the backlight of the panel. The bigger bunch on the right transfer the image for the panel itself.
From the front
Here's the panel and the backlight detached. I was happy to discover that the metal frame around the panel was really thin even it's a year 2002 model. This fits perfectly into my plan to show the parts completely.

I encountered a little problem while detaching the panel and the electronics driving it: one very small connector got sliced in half. This resulted to be a bigger problem later when putting it all back together.
PSU
Samtron 51S has an integrated power supply. Here it's seen separately with the other electronics.
