Test setup & Overclocking
|
|
For the benchmarking and overclocking we used the same setup as in the original 965BE C3 review. |
CPU-Z

With the locked multipliers on the Athlons, overclocking is simply cranking up the FSB until some stability issues are found and then coming back a bit. Really the only difference with the 255, 440 and 635 is the slightly different multiplier, and ofcourse the different number of CPU cores, but in the overclocking sector we didn't really find differences - the roof was found after upping the core speed by about 400 MHz every time. We'll see how these improvements effect the performance later on, but on paper the 400 MHz gain is a pretty decent one.

The Phenom II X2 555 is a Black Edition CPU, which means that the multiplier isn't locked and you can adjust just about everything from the AMD Overdrive-software. This also meant that overclocking was a different affair and here we just cranked up the multiplier until the CPU could no longer cope with our benchmarks. The resulting clock speed and core voltage after a bit of tinkering were 3,8 GHz (19x200) at 1,4375 volts. The 555BE is basically the same chip as the 965BE seen earlier, but AMD probably picks the worse chips to become 555's, which would explain the slightly worse overclocking results with the dual core.
