The connections on the 9800GX2 are two dual-link DVIs and a single HDMI connection. This is the first card in a long while that doesn't have a connection for component, composite and s-video signal. In theory it should be possible to use the card in a single GPU mode and have four monitors connected, but Nvidia has limited the number of connections to three. Beside the connections there is also a ventilation grill in the rear panel.

The size difference between the 9800GX2 and 8800GTS isn't really that big. The GX2 is four centimeters longer than the 8800GTS and measures 27 cm, but it's worth noticing that the power connectors are located to the side of it rather than end, so the cables don't require any extra room when the card is installed in the case.

With the 9800GX2 Nvidia has taken a step towards easier usage and added some leds to their new card. Here one can see the power-connector leds in use. When the user tries to use the card with two 6-pin power connectors instead of 6+8 pin connectors, the 8-pin connector indicates wrong connector with a red led. Maybe not the most anticipiated new feature, but a nice little step to the right direction compared to the old method of making a loud scream. With the right 8 and 6 pin cables connected both connectors have green light.

Seeing the specifications there's no doubt if the 9800GX2 is at the top of Nvidia's current range of desktop graphic cards. It's worth noticing though that the 9800GX2 is basicly two 8800GTS and for example the memory bandwidth of both individual cards is still 256 bits and not full 512 bits.

The GPU-Z shows that indeed the GPU is similar with the 8800GTS 512MB reviewed earlier. The clock frequencies do differe a bit from the 8800GTS though. The GPU clock on the 9800GX2 is dropped to 600 MHz, which helps keeping the card cool, memories operate at full 1000 MHz (2 GHz DDR) and the shader clock is set to 1500 MHz.
