The design

The design of the new Sidewinder X5 is the same as with the original model. There are some things missing though, like the adjustable weights and the LCD screen. Alloy scroll wheel has been replaced with a rubber coated plastic one and the overall coloring is bit darker.

Design that works for one player, may be horrible to another. It is great that we have such a variety of design when it comes to computer mice. Gaming products tend to focus on bright lights, flashy colors and high prices but not these higher end models (exclude that high price though...). High quality materials and stylish outlooks are the things that make a good product in my books.

Scroll wheel is covered with soft rubber and it feels steady to operate. Wheel have distinctive steps when scrolling so selecting for example weapons during gaming is sharp and accurate.

Buttons on the top are used to select the sensitivity. There are three buttons -> three separate levels that can be configured with the software. Three is good but for most users a single button that switches between two different levels would have been easier and faster to use. It is also sad that these buttons can't be reconfigured to different tasks like the rest of the buttons on the mouse.

Two side buttons are normally used for Forward and Back functions with the internet browser. They can be mapped and one can bind for example macros to them. For me personally, having these side button on top of each another is better than having them side by side. This has again much to do with user preferences and the length of the fingers but for me, this works wonders.

On top of the mouse one can see a lonely button. It opens the games menu on a Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. On XP machine it will open up the settings menu for the mouse properties. Again, it is bit sad that one can't alter the functionality of this button either.
