LCD & Lights

Lighting effects with SideWinder are well balanced. LCD is not always shining bright so when gaming, one should receive minimum amout of distraction from it. Sensitivity button are lighted so that the currently activated setting is indicated with a lit button.

LCD screen is relatively small. It can indicate basic data like currently selected sensitivity and some instructions when recording a macro. I think that this feature is actually useful and hopefully we will start to see more of these in future models. I did something similar in my LogiNoki modding project a while back so it is nice to see this idea catching fire.

Afterburners from a jetfighter plane perhaps?
Noise
Normally I don't think about noise when using a mouse. This time things were bit different
though. I had my brother visiting and he asked if there is something wrong with the mouse as
it clicked so loudly. SideWinder is also the first mouse that receives comments from my wife
in terms of noise. During the night while surfing, clicking noise can be heard to the next
room. What, no more night time surfing on... community sites?!
Perhaps the noise is not an issue for most of the users but I happen to like the sound coming from the Logitech's G9 more. It sounds more "solid" and not as loud.
Conclusion
Facts are now laid out and it is time for judgement. I have to say that for me the SideWinder was a mixed package. It felt perfect on some areas but let me down on others. I believe that in my case, most of the problems were caused by the dimensions and the shape of the mouse. I had a hard time on reaching the side buttons and when talking about gaming, it made the product nearly useless for me. The LCD screen was a nice addition. It added some functionality but also boosted the overall appearance of the product. Is the SideWinder meant for you? If you have liked the shapes of previous mice from Microsoft, I believe you will find SideWinder to be a very competitive gaming mouse. It is priced the same as Razer's DeathAdder and Logitech's G5 gaming mice so in the end, the decision should be made by visiting your local computer hardware store and seeing which mouse feels right to your hand. There is no point on getting some product that has the latest and greatest technology in it but just doesn't fit your hand or your gaming style. |
